DESCRIPTION

There have been eight Jews sitting as Associate Justices on the Supreme Court of the United States. In this course over three 90-minute sessions, we will discuss the personal history and judicial contributions of each. One, Abe Fortas, resigned in disgrace, ultimately resulting in Warren Burger becoming Chief Justice. Another, Arthur Goldberg, resigned in what is generally understood to be a foolish act of hubris. I have a story to tell about him from my father, but you will have to register for this course to hear it! Then there are the giants, especially Felix Frankfurter who created a still-influential body of cases on the jurisdiction of the federal courts. At one time, there were three Jewish Justices on the Court: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, and Elena Kagan; only Justice Kagan remains. From Louis Brandeis to Elena Kagan, that is our brief. Registration is required.
