JONESTOWN: THE OLDEST, HISTORIC BALTIMORE SETTLEMENT AND CENTER OF JEWISH LIFE

This series is designed to familiarize students with the landscape, stories, buildings and people of Jonestown revealed through four centuries of American history and epic change. Jonestown is the most historic, oldest and least known of Baltimore’s communities. Learn about Jonestown’s ethnic, racial cultural, religious and social diversity making it a unique community in our city, state and nation. Bev tells the history of the Jones Falls and how it served as the powerhouse in making Baltimore a commercial and industrial giant and the third largest city in the nation by 1850. As Jonestown was the largest immigrant port of entry next to Ellis Island, we will discover how the succession of immigrant groups contributed to the Baltimore economy, commerce and culture. We will explore the Jewish immigrant presence as Jonestown became the center of Jewish life and learn about Jonestown’s many landmarks and historic firsts of this district. See how the religious, charitable, community service organizations supported Jonestown’s population from the 18th century to the present which have found their way to museums after being returned to the family.
